Opera Unite Re-invents and Benefits the Whole Web

Four days ago, Norweigan-based browser Opera said that they will “reinvent the web” which has sparked off many discussions made by Opera users on forums and Twitter. Some are curious of what special feautres they will released on June 16 whereas the rest mock at the statement, saying that Opera, with just 1% of the browser market share despite having 15 years of history is impossible to “re-invent” the web.

Opera today unveiled Opera Unite, a new technology that shakes up the old client-server computing model of the Web. Opera Unite turns any computer into both a client and a server, allowing it to interact with and serve content to other computers directly across the Web, without the need for third-party servers.

Opera Unite makes serving data as simple and easy as browsing the Web. For consumers, Opera Unite services give greater control of private data and make it easy to share data with any device equipped with a modern Web browser.

For Web developers, Opera Unite services are based on the same open Web standards as Web sites today. This dramatically simplifies the complexity of authoring cutting-edge Web services. With Opera Unite, creating a full Web service is now as easy as coding a Web page.

It seems like P2P sharing technology which is quite popular among all netizens, and this can save lots of servers and increase the efficiency of file sharing. The only difference is, Opera Unite uses the existed protocol, that can make web developers’ life much easier.

Now more and more web applications are being built, and there are also more and more Cloud-Computing service providers to serve them As the computing cycle is growing, we must build more and more datacenters with more and more servers. This will lead to an unbalanced situation for C/S model, as the computing cycle of the servers should be much more than the one of clients if we want to do everything on the web.

Opera Unite is an extremely wonderful solution for this situation, use the same concept of P2P sharing, we can simply share the web content. That can reduce the server-load, increase the browsing speed, save money and energy.

The result or effect of Opera Unite will be very amazing, maybe web developers do not need to buy expensive Cloud-Computing Services or dedicated servers any more, they can simply use Opera Unite APIs and build on their own machine and even operate on their own machine. Can we imagine that one day our Personal Computers will become the server of Google, Facebook and Twitter?

Actually the idea of Opera Unite is quite like the idea I have ever described in a previous post, I predicted that Google may release Cloud-Computing Platform which enables us to exchange our Computing Cycle, that is becoming true today, Opera Unite is just like this. For me, Opera Unite can really re-invent the web as the future I imagined is becoming true now.

For a company with only 1% in web browser market share, that’s a really amazing invention, but the issue is, can it be operated well? I’m strongly agree that Opera is innovative, not only because of the integrated Opera Mail, Speed Dial, but also the amazing Turbo and today’s Opera Unite. I hope that Opera can success this time with 15 years of web browser innovation, since Opera Unite will benefit all web developers and all netizens.
