iPad: My Thoughts

Apple on Wednesday released a giant iPhone called iPad, named after a feminine hygiene product. No, in all seriousness, this device is impressive. For the last 2 months people were almost definite that the iPad would be named “iSlate” because Apple bought the domain “islate.com”. Turns out, Apple didn’t even have “ipad.com”, kind of makes me laugh.

Hardware:

Processor: Custom Apple A4 processor. 1GHZ
Camera: NONE
Display: 9.7 inch, 1024 by 768
Available Versions:

The 3G version will have a fee of $30.00 a month, no contract, and will connect with AT&T’s 3G. Can AT&T handle the extra data usage, I think not.

My Thoughts

I am still on the fence about the iPad. I cannot decide if it is a device I would want to buy. It just doesn’t seem geeky enough. But then again, Apple is a mass market company, not only trying to appeal to the geeks. The device would be handy to have on an airplane or be sitting in a coffee shop with. But would I spend $400.00 on something that I already have, an iPod touch? I don’t think so. I think the device is way to big for me to carry around. I enjoy having an iPod touch in one pocket, and my HTC Droid Eris in another. If I think I really am going to be surfing the web alot, and I am on the go, I will just bring my Laptop and hook it up to PDA Net. PDA Net allows great tethering.

Personally, I think Apple would of been smarter to release a netbook. I don’t see people buying this. A netbook is much smaller, not as easy to break, and a lot more usable. The only way I can see the iPad succeeding is for eBooks, or reading the newspaper. I am sure the iPad is much easier to read on, then the Kindle or the Nook. Overall I won’t be buying the device. I see a small group of average consumers buying it also. I don’t think the 3G version will succeed also. There is Wi-Fi almost everywhere you go and people have mobile data plans, on their phones. It’s just an over size iPod. What are your thoughts?
