The tech world went crazy when the tech juggernaut announced its delicate, yet sturdy, bridge-shaped mouse called Magic Mouse. Touted as the “best mouse Apple’s made in years”, the Magic Mouse has helped the Cupertino-based company double its US mice sales in only eight weeks since its release, according to NPD Group. Amazingly, Apple achieved a 10 percent marketshare, a first in its history. This was mainly due to the spike in sales of Magic Mouse.
“Sales in November were through the roof,” Stephen Baker, analyst with the market research firm, told AppleInsider. “[The Magic Mouse] had the best month for a mouse product from Apple that we’ve ever seen.”
The data compiled by the NDP Group showed only standalone sales, disregarding the units bundled with updated 21.5- and 27-inch iMacs. Apple’s mouse market share could have been higher if it was introduced on PCs with full Windows OS support. Unfortunately, due to compatibility issues.
Apple currently stands at third position in the mouse market, ahead of HP and Targus but far behind leaders Logitech and Microsoft. “They’re not exactly challenging Logitech or Microsoft at this point, who are far and away the leaders, but they’ve been No. 3 for a long time,” Baker explained.
The Magic Mouse, which was introduced by Apple on October 20, is the first consumer mouse to have multi-touch capabilities. It allows the use of gestures such as swiping and scrolling to interact with desktop computers.
Will Logitech or Windows come up with such really cool mouse in the near future? I believe they will.
