Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Review

Battlefield is legendary on the PC, but the main front in the war for first person shooters is now on consoles. With a billion dollars worth of sales, Modern Warfare 2 has proved dominant. So EA sent DICE to make a battlefield which can compete with MW2. And the result is Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

Bad Company 2’s single player lost its humor from the first game. While trying to meet MW2, it is now about saving. the. world. by stopping a WMD. Deja-vu? The characters even makes “oh-no-you-didn’t” jokes aimed at MW2. It’s still cheeky and cheesy at some points, but its dead serious most points. The story does not stick with you, but it’s good enough to lead you to your next battle. Hopefully, it will have tanks.

But Battlefield was never about single player- BF2142 don’t even have a campaign. The multiplayer certainly delivers in this game.

The multiplayer is refined, top-classed stuff. The frostbite engine powering BF:BC2 lets you blow anything up. You can just blow a hole in any wall to gain quick entrance into a building. Also, if you damage a building enough, it will crumble and crush anything in it- including any objectives you need to destroy.

Teamwork is vital- which is what sets it apart from most modern shooters. While a single solo-ist can help a team of utter noobs win the games, a team of noobs working together will easily win a match. The squad mechanic is the centre of the teamworking. You can spawn on anyone in your squad- if someone is defending an objective, you can drop in right beside him to cover his back. If someone just died, a medic can revive him. After a while, you will feel inclined to move together with other people- which is nearly non-existent in other shooters.

If you are bad on feet, why don’t try drive a tank or pilot a helicopter? While non-invincible, vehicles can be a pain to the opponent team. A great tank commander can knock out most enemies in their direct vicinity but in maps as big as towns (it takes 5 minutes drive a tank from 1 end to the other, that will not help much. Your teammates must hold their part of the long frontline or a single guy will sneak through and his squadmates will spawn on him.

If you are trying to find a game more realistic then Halo or less skill based then call of duty, this is your game. Grab a few friends (or just find a few while playing) and go all tactical online. It’s hard to go wrong with Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
