3 Must-Try (Free) Apps for the iPhone

apple-iphone-in-hand-thumbThe iPhone and iPod touch been around for a few years, but it has boomed to such a level that they are now considered the BEST of phones. Of course, they are backed by legions of apple fanboys.

But really, the iPhone boomed because of one reason – not because it’s purely touched-based, not because it is made by apple, but because everyone can make apps with it, whether you are 9 or 90. And most of the apps are free! What it means is you get extra bang for your buck, without apple needing to move their butts. The iPhone developers are Apple’s free advertisement.

So, here are 3 must-try apps. Most importantly they are free. They are NOT lite versions.

1: Supreme Air Combat

The game is sponsored by the Australian military campaign “Defense Jobs”, and it is not too complicated. You have a squadron of F-18 fighter planes which you control by clicking buttons around it (as seen above). It is turned base, so you need to predict where the enemy is. It is awfully simple, but it got depth and strategy. I could say, either fly my planes in in a column to make a killzone, where anything in front of it is dead or chase them to a corner of the map and trap them there.

Got a friend with an iPod? Challenge them to a classic turn-base strategy game. I never tried that before, but the promise is relatively high.

It is even trademarked by a country. Not a company, but a country.

2: Crash Landing

It’s simple, and has been done a thousand times on a thousand consoles. But this is quality. The accelerometer detects your movement, and your ship responds to it. Let me just tell you- people use the phase “this isn’t rocket science” for a reason.

IT IS HARD!!!!! But if you manage to land it, you will feel a sense of accomplishment. I mastered this game, and it is still the game I play on the bus to waste time. There isn’t much more to say about it- you have to try it to believe it.

3. TuneWiki

Like singing karaoke? Web 2.0 is your solution!

God, that joke is horrible. Anyway, as the title says, it is a wiki. On tunewiki.com, people start typing lyrics into a database. When you on the song on tunewiki, it finds the lyrics on the server and streams it down. The first few people who receive the lyrics will be asked (quite politely) to click on the lyric box, and move the lyrics line by line according to the song. Thus, the next person will have the luxury of the lyrics scrolling by it, letting him sing with ease.

You can even see a map showing where people using tunewiki are, so you can… Will, I don’t really know what you are suppose to do with their location. Maybe do the moonwalk with them when you see someone play a MJ song? But it IS a Wiki, and it will screw up on you once in a while.
