Microsoft Word Patent Infringement: Consumer Standpoint and Alternatives

In late August, Microsoft was sued by Toronto technology firm i4i, because of an infringement in Microsoft Word that affects “document architecture and content.” Microsoft was ordered to give the firm $200 million  in damages. If found guilty, Microsoft must stop selling any version of  Word. (For more info regarding the case, click here.)

This is very bad timing for consumers, with college kids going back to school, and the holiday season only 3 months away. Many of us use Microsoft Office at work, school, and at home; we can’t afford to lose such a valuable piece of software.  Now to clarify: If you own Microsoft Word, or if it’s installed on your computer  you are safe. If you don’t have it,  buy it, or you may be soon out of luck. But good news; Microsoft is trying to settle the issue. They fully understand how important this case is.
